Sustainability
At Mahala, sustainability is not an afterthought—it’s at the heart of everything we do. We believe that luxury and responsibility can, and must, go hand in hand. From the fibres we choose to the partners we collaborate with, every decision is rooted in our commitment to protecting the environment and supporting the communities that make our work possible.
Our journey is ongoing, and we’re constantly refining our processes to ensure that our textiles not only meet the highest standards of quality but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
Thoughtfully Sourced Natural Fibres
Our textiles are crafted exclusively from natural fibres, including linen, wool, silk, and Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) cotton. These materials are selected for their beauty, durability, and reduced environmental impact. We are proud that our fibres are fully traceable, ensuring transparency from farm to fabric. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are also working towards introducing GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic materials into our collection, further enhancing our offering of luxurious, responsibly sourced textiles.
Sustainable Production Practices
Our production methods are carefully designed to minimise waste and reduce environmental impact. We work closely with mills and workshops that share our values, ensuring that each piece is made with respect for both the environment and the skilled artisans who bring our designs to life.
At the heart of our British-made collections is the David Walters mill in Suffolk, a 300-year-old family-run mill with a rich history of weaving excellence. David Walters is deeply committed to sustainability, using water-conserving processes and energy-efficient production techniques. Their approach honours traditional craftsmanship while integrating modern methods to reduce waste, making them the perfect partner for Mahala Textiles.
For our internationally produced collections, we partner with Parry Murray, a longstanding family business with roots in India and operations in both India and the UK. Parry Murray shares our focus on reducing the environmental impact of textile production, incorporating energy-efficient manufacturing, careful waste management, and water conservation techniques. Together, we ensure that our textiles are produced with the utmost respect for people and the planet.
Water Conservation: Reverse Osmosis and Beyond
Water is a crucial resource in textile production, and we take great care to use it responsibly. In partnership with Parry Murray, we use reverse osmosis technology to purify water during the dyeing and finishing processes. This ensures that the water is clean and safe, while also significantly reducing water waste. By incorporating this technology into our production, we create beautiful fabrics while minimising the strain on local water resources.
Charity: Water Partnership
Beyond our material and production choices, we believe in giving back. Since our inception, we have proudly supported Charity: Water, a non-profit organisation that provides clean and safe drinking water to communities in need around the world. By supporting Charity: Water, we extend our commitment to responsible business practices beyond textiles, helping to create a positive impact on a global scale.
Looking Ahead
We’re committed to continually improving our sustainability practices. This includes working towards introducing GOTS-certified organic materials and aiming for B Corp certification to ensure our business meets the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility. The steps we take now are aimed at making a lasting, positive impact on the environment and the communities we work with.
